About me
I Live in Cape Town and started B-Curious in Jun 2009. I am an entrepeneur at heart and enjoy the company of like minded entrepenuers. I am 30 years old and have done various work in the arts, entertainment, social upliftment and political arenas.
To our Family and Friends: We are in the process of starting a Venture Capital Club. Yes, that is right. The great thing is that we would like each of you to be the founding members. You may be thinking right now that you know nothing about shares or Venture Capital, so you cannot join. That is the beautiful thing about this Venture Capital club. We are all relative novices at Venture Capital investing, so we can all learn together in a Venture Capital Investment Club.

But you do not have enough money. No problem there either. At our first meeting we will decide on monthly payments, but they will be no more than R300 per person per month. That is about average for a Venture Capital club. But you do not have the time? We will have one meeting per month that will last about 1½ to 2 hours. Not bad, huh? You will be expected on occasion to do some business/share research. We will all learn how. That may take a couple hours at first, then about a ½ hour when you know what you are doing. All the rest of the details we can figure out later. We both want this to be a fun activity where we can all learn together, and, make some money in the arts and entertainment market without much risk involved.

Please email b-curious@telkomsa.net for more info.

Hi Angelo
Exciting news about venture capital company, but I am based in the Northern Cape and would not be able to get to meetings, perhaps i could start 'sister' companies for you, I live in both the Eastern and Northern Cape (Graaff-Reinet and Hanover) and with your guidance i could help swell membership.
Need to network more anyway...and have some good contacts being a bit older than you...Chat again

Mark Bind Looking for a workshop venue in Cape Town
11:29 AM
Mark Bind created a new topic New Business Accelerator in the forums.
I am looking for some feedback on a series of workshops aimed at helping small business owners increase sales and margins.

Would you benefit from having:
- More ways to generate leads
- Converting more of your leads into sales
- Having a clearer understanding on who your ideal customer is
- Finding out how to get your customers to choose you over your competition
- Increasing the number of times your customers buy from you and increasing the amount they spend each time
- Having a bigger Gross Margin Percentage?

What else would you like to focus on in a workshop?

Please make suggestions, and I’ll see if I can incorporate them.

Thanks,

Mark

For many small business owners the question is how far will you go to achieve your dreams...

When you are starting out you should spend about 80% of your working time on marketing/new business activities. The importance of marketing during the first few months is underestimated!

I am always suprised with how little my clients are acually doing to attract leads. Most businesses rely on only 1 or 2 channels for attracting leads. Work on getting more!

Then work on converting the leads you get!

Nokukhanya created a new topic How far do you have to go to get new business in the forums.
With an ever changing business environment in South Africa today young business always face the risk that market penetration through advertising alone simply wont bring in new business.

The question then arises,
How far do you have to go to get new business? Any thoughts?

Nope - I wouldn't pay too much attention to the Alexa ranking...

Junior webmaster might look at a high Alexa rank and be impressed - it's not going to help you get more business in.

Rather focus on writing quality content for your website.

I had a quick look at your websit and I'd recommend that if you are wanting to improve it and drive more traffic to you site, you post in the Websit Reviews section:

Is it important to do marketing and communications during a recession?

Nokukhanya recently ran a workshop with young entrepreneurs who raised this question which raised very interesting debate and we hope that this may assist with the answer.

While marketing and advertising is very beneficial to the growth of a business it comes at quite a high cost, and usually is a cost that most business cant afford, and this really served as the crux of the debate. Nokukhanya obviously took a pro marketing approach whilst the financial colleagues tried to quantify and denounce the spend. While we tried our best we had to concede that the answer really lied in between. The reality of the South African market is that it relies heavy on large corporates to deliver product and no matter how hard you try our recessionary times may not effectively grow your business.

In true entrepreneurial fashion, Nokukhanya has decided to launch a cheaper marketing and communication package offered to the market which primarily is the setup and creation of free media over the internet using social networking and business listings, this effectively means you grow brand awareness and in order to maintain your business.

What do you think

Dylan Phelan replied to the topic Re: My Introduction and a Gift for you in the forums.
Thanks for the detailed explanation there.

To summarize:

Wordpress is a good option for a basic company website - a basic 5 page site. It's also great if you're publishing articles on your niche.

If you need a website with a diverse range of functionality I'd go for Joomla or Drupal.

If you're focusing only on ecommerce and want a robust solution, then Magento will be a good option.

Dylan Phelan Took the plunge and added a bit of advertising to the site. Seems like the logical step since moving the products and services off. Will keep them as unobtrusive as possible :-)
