“Just let me close off and finish everything before year end and I will get back to you next year” echoes through the phone lines around the world. This got me thinking that we live in increments of 12, further divided into smaller, bite size increments which assist us cope with stresses though-out our lives – we are well conditioned that January arrives like a knight in shining armor with a clean slate in hand and a plethora of new beginnings! So lets do exactly that, unwrap the New Year box and allow a fresh start and new look at how we can do things better in 2012!

It is no secret that the financial ramifications have torn through the world like an angry tornado, leaving whole countries negotiating for bail out. Setting financial goals in an individual capacity, which supersede January, is imperative right now – create a list of your absolute ‘must haves’ to sustain life in one column and progressively work through your expenses until you end in your luxury column. Assess your list with a new mind set acknowledging that a successful way to cut back is to start creating a saving mentality.

Health is another area of focus that must not be ignored. Most people know their weight and clothing size, but do you know your cholesterol, blood pressure and sugar levels? Starting the new year taking control of any of the above readings (which are not deemed as normal), is a great time to take action – It is a new mind set and should not start ‘on Monday’ or ‘after the holidays’ but should start NOW – why not change your indoctrinated sloth like and indulgent holiday habits and rather treat it like a health spa! You have all the time in the world to prepare healthy meals nurturing you and your family while on holiday.

Fitness and exercise create energy and vitality! Start slowly and build up to fit and vibrant throughout 2012 – increasing your blood flow has tremendous benefits on so many levels. Make the decision to be fit - get up and make it happen!

Weight loss is the all time favorite resolution this time of the year. The trick is to escape the diet, binge, diet cycle and forget about any quick fix, the average quick fix diet lasts three days – they don’t work. Healthy is the way to go, by establishing healthy eating patterns that enhance your life and fit around your schedule. Make a list of those dangerous foods which you eat when you are not hungry and encourage you to “start tomorrow’ once you give into them. Binge eating is a psychological condition that millions of people experience, so you need to make the decision to either give those foods up or change your attitude towards them. Often, once the binging is addressed the weight loss will follow. Overcome the urge to diet, stop binge eating completely and lose weight. Choose to change the way you think about yourself and take responsibility for making it happen. Remember that where attention goes, you body follows so start to act and live like a slim person now.

Testimonials from a consortium of slim people;

  • I only eat when I am hungry and stop eating before I am full
  • I choose to avoid foods that could make me fat and rather eat healthy, nutritious foods
  • I am active and healthy, I choose to feel good

In closing here are some points which will assist you in creating a healthy, nutritionally optimal way of life. Breakfast is a great way to start your day and boosts your metabolism. Have your regular meals ready for when you start feeling hungry (5 meals a day). A small portion of protein at every meal helps to stabalise your blood sugar and encourages more fat loss than muscle loss. Have low GI carbohydrates like sweet potato rather then higher GI carbohydrates. Fruit and vegetables are an excellent source of fiber and are usually lower in calories. Drink 2 liters of water every day and reduce alcohol and other high calorie beverages. Exercise where possible everyday.

And in closing, here is wishing everyone a wonderful and successful 2012
