ok thanks for the quick reply,

our accountant said we should not claim rent because then when we sell we will negate the R1.5mil excempt from CGT.

That is correct, when working from home you are allowed to claim some expense. The way you work that out is basically the following.
You take the area of your working space, that is basically your desk size, as a % of the size of your home.
You are then allowed to claim the % of that for your rates, and taxes, bond repayment, electricity ect.

so you saying i can claim these expenses and not lose the CGT.

Yes, CGT have nothing to do with the work you do from your home.

CGT is worked out when you sell your home one day and then it is worked out on the profit you make when selling your home, less the rebate you getting
