I am interested in getting a courier contract with any business or small business. I am a woman who managed to buy a bakie and now want to start something with the car that I bought. The bakie that I have is a one ton.

How would you charge for deliveries that are smallish packages all over CT i.e. town, southern suburbs, Atlantis and as far as Paarl? Would it be per km or a flat rate per day?

I have my own small courier company. It is best to charge with a rate for 1 - 10 kgs. Anything bigger than that should be per kg. Also add a percentage of you rate to cover fuel costs, anything from 10% - 20%. If you travel more than 50 kms one way to do a delivery then charge per kilometer. I hope this info helps you.

Many thanks Warren, I really appreciate your advice. Hope all will work for me. I had a client who wanted to use by car for transporting herself to and from work. Like rental, how would I charge the client since the bakie is used not for courier?

Then its best to use AA rates and charge per kilometer. You can work out all your costs at www.aa.co.za

I am in Johannesburg, Westrand-Weltevereden park.
I have not yet started, I need to go out and look for clients and get a contract. I planned to take leave from work for two weeks as from next week Monday. I hope I will be able to get something from any company.

When you start, let me know. Maybe we can work together with some areas. I would say that with you being in the West Rand, there is a big demand for couriers in Krugersdorp / Randfontein areas. Not too many courier companies go out that way because it's "not worth it" for small amounts of cargo. You could market that area and see what you can make of it.
